Memberships - Membership Prerequisites

Restrict Membership Eligibility Based on Membership Purchase History

Written by Ashley Owens

INTRODUCTION

Feature Summary: Membership Prerequisites allow system users to restrict eligibility for specific memberships to members who have previously purchased certain membership types.

Use Cases:

  • Offer a discounted renewal membership exclusively to members with an existing purchase history

  • Create tiered membership structures that reward returning members

  • Prevent first-time members from accessing renewal-only pricing

SETUP REQUIREMENTS

  1. Log in to the admin panel.

  2. From the side menu, click Memberships. A new page displays.

  3. Click the Individual or Family tab.

  4. Select a membership type.

  5. Click the Portal Settings tab.

Membership Prerequisite(s) - Select one or more prerequisite membership types to restrict access to this membership. Only members who have previously purchased the selected membership types will be eligible.

For example: A 2024 full-member rate may be available only to renewing members. In that case, system users should create a separate membership type for first-time members.

Note: Any membership with a prerequisite configured will display a prerequisite icon in the memberships table for quick reference.

For example: The 2026 Annual Membership is configured with the 2025 Annual Membership as a prerequisite. Only members who previously purchased the 2025 Annual Membership will see the 2026 Annual Membership as an available option on the member portal. Here, the system users added a membership description to communicate the requirement.

Bypass Prerequisites

Bypass Prerequisites - Check this box for any membership that has no prerequisites.

Important: If your organization uses Membership Prerequisites on select memberships, any membership without prerequisites must have Bypass Prerequisites checked - otherwise it will not appear publicly on the member portal.
